We’ve all heard the phrase, ‘numbers don’t lie.’ But, as with many things, numbers alone don’t always tell the full story.
When it comes to retail, the size of a store isn’t just about the number of locations; it’s about how that space is used and what it offers to customers. In retail, there’s a direct relationship between the amount of retail space, the number of stock-keeping units (SKUs), and sales volume. More space means more items on display, which in turn means more variety for customers to choose from, and ultimately, higher sales volumes. This principle is at the core of global retail giants like Amazon and Walmart, both of which have vast retail spaces that allow them to expand their offerings exponentially, drive customer activity, and boost sales.

The diverse landscape of retailers in Nigeria shows that size and reach alone don’t define market leadership — it’s also about the experience and value that each space brings to the customer. So, when we discuss the largest grocery retailers in Nigeria, we must consider these factors. While Bokku can be called the largest convenience store chain in the country, it does not meet the criteria to be considered the largest supermarket chain. Bokku can be proud of its reach, however, its ability to meet the diverse needs of customers with the required level of depth and variety is not at a supermarket level. When we look at supermarkets specifically, MarketSquare stands as the largest in terms of number of outlets, retail space, stock volume, and sales — offering a deeper and broader shopping experience than the likes of Spar, Jendol and Justrite.
From a recent info on their page, MarketSquare operates over 40,000 square meters of retail space across 36 locations, offering an extensive selection of products that cater to every customer’s need. Compare that to Bokku, which, despite its 134 locations, probably operates on a smaller retail space and stocks a smaller range of items in each of its stores. Similarly, Spar, though an established player in the market, has not expanded as rapidly as MarketSquare, whose growth has outpaced Spar’s.

At present, MarketSquare can convincingly claim to be the largest grocery retailer in Nigeria, surpassing other retailers like Bokku, Adidde, Spar, Jendol, Justrite, and even some regional players like Hmedix, Sahad Stores, and Roban, who primarily serve specific areas in the country.
