President Bola Tinubu says that democracy has risen from the ashes since 1999’s return to the civilian rule. He said this in his address to the National Assembly on Thursday to commemorate June 12 Democracy Day.
“Every time we argue instead of fight, we promote democracy,” he said. He said while MKO Abiola is the central figure of June 12, the nation must not forget individuals who fought for the democracy Nigerians now enjoy. He said it is fitting for him to come to the National Assembly, noting that though he must not always agree with them, there is a need to forge a common front.
He said in 2010, the National Assemblt, through the Doctrine of Necessity, brought President Goodluck Jonathan to power. He commended the National Assembly for its resilience.
“For those who ring the alarm that the APC is on the path of a one party state, at no time shall I view the notion of a one-party state as good for Nigeria,” he said.
“I will be the last person to advocate it. In their numbers, they boasted of ruling Nigeria for the next century or more. Where are they now? Even with of that, they could not control my destiny or the destiny of the nation.” He said that the APC must not close its doors to new members.
In obvious jab on the People’s Democractic Party (PDP), he said he would not help the party to put its party in order nor would he advise them to do so. He said the PDP’s current state is good for him.
