There was mild drama at the Senate on Wednesday, when the senator representing Ebonyi South in the National Assembly, Sonni Ogbuoji, rescinded his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Trouble started after the lawmaker raised a Point of Order, informing lawmakers of his defection from the PDP due to what he called ‘intractable crisis in the party at both state and national level’.
The development led to a rowdy session, as PDP lawmakers protested, while APC senators approached Ogbuoji to leave his seat with PDP lawmakers to join his APC colleagues.
But after a rowdy session, which lasted for over 15 minutes, the lawmaker rescinded his decision for further consultation.
“Because of the love they (PDP senators) showed to me, I have decided to step down my defection for further consultation,” he declared.
As it stands, APC controls 67 seats as against 41 positions by PDP.
This is the first time a serving lawmaker in the Eighth Senate would rescind his decision to cross-carpet to another political party.
