Determined to add humour to an otherwise serious matter, Olakunle Agu, a staff of Skye Bank plc, chose an unusual place and occasion to propose for marriage to Dolapo Akinmayowa, a staff of International Logistics and Fulfillment Services Ltd.

The would-be husband and wife left many people tongue-tied as Agu slipped a silver-coated ring on Dolapo’s finger. Those waiting to be accredited by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) savoured the happy moment as they took turns having handshake with Agu and Akinmayowa.

The dramatic ‘marry me’ wooing took place at Ward 016, opposite Bank-Olemoh community junction by Akerele, Surulere, Lagos.

The ward is a stone-throw to the residence and polling booth of Femi Gbajabiamila, a three-time representative of Surulere I Federal Constituency, Lagos, at the House of Representatives.

Speaking with our reporter on what informed the public show of the proposal and at a time like this, Agu said: “I want something memorable because this time is unique when Nigerians are going to the polls. You see, there’s so much anxiety and gloom, but we just decided to add humour to an otherwise tense situation. We are trying to show Nigerians that even in the midst of despondency, there is reason to cheer.”

A bystander, who simply introduced herself as Kemi, told BD SUNDAY that it was high time people started to do some of those things that happen in America, London and some other developed societies.

“I was happy for them. In fact, I shed tears of joy. At first, I did not quite understand what they were up to. I just saw two young people move in front; they were on queue quite alright, and before you say Jack, the young man had slipped a fine ring on the finger of a lady standing next to him. It was a beautiful scene I must confess. We should be seeing more of such things; it humourises situations that are supposed to be uptight,” Kemi said.

The polling unit where the drama took place was about three-minute drive to the home of the late father of Governor Babatunde Fashola located opposite the extension of the Randle General Hospital in the Gbaja area of Surulere. Gbaja is one of the major beneficiaries of the current administration’s infrastructure distribution in the state.
