The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest and detention of 18-year-old Alabi Quadri, whose image went viral during the 2023 election season after a spontaneous encounter with presidential candidate Peter Obi in Lagos.

Quadri, who briefly captured public attention after stepping in front of Obi’s motorcade during a campaign rally, was freed on Thursday following months in custody at a correctional facility.

According to the police, the teenager was brought to a station by youths from his neighbourhood who alleged that he was involved in a robbery gang disturbing the community.

Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin said in a statement that Quadri had been implicated in a violent outbreak in the Amukoko area on January 22, which left multiple residents injured and robbed during a clash involving rival youth groups.

“Quadri is 18 and therefore not a minor,” said Hundeyin. “He was taken into custody and remanded at the correctional facility after his involvement in attacks that disrupted public peace in Amukoko.”

The police noted that the unrest led to injuries and theft, with eyewitnesses and victims reportedly providing critical information to authorities that helped identify those allegedly responsible.

Hundeyin stated that following a detailed investigation, Quadri and four other suspects were apprehended and formally charged in court.

“The Lagos State Police Command undoubtedly reiterates its commitment to upholding the rule of law to ensure justice in all matters, and also ensuring the safety and security of all residents,” he said.

“All police actions taken in this case have been in the laid-down processes and in accordance with due process, procedures, and based on credible evidence gathered during the investigation.”

He called for calm and urged the public to let the judicial process unfold without interference.

However, Inihebe Effiong, counsel to Quadri, has demanded a public apology and N100 million in damages from the police, alleging wrongful detention and rights violations.
