The University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, warned parents and students seeking admission into the university to be wary of fraudsters who promise their victims special admissions to the institution.
Ajoke Alaga-Ibrahim, the head of the communication unit at UNILAG made this known in a statement on Thursday when she dissociated the institution from any group or individual promising anybody what she called “discretionary admission opportunities”.
“The University of Lagos as a result of this categorically disclaims and dissociates itself from any claims, representations, or other communications by any individual or group claiming to offer “discretionary admission opportunities” or special consideration through unofficial channels.
“We specifically reiterate that all admissions to UNILAG are conducted strictly through the official channel, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board in line with guidelines and procedures as stated on our website,” the statement reads in part.
Alaga-Ibrahim further explained that the university has not, directly or indirectly, authorised any social media groups such as WhatsApp, and Facebook, among others, or any third parties to facilitate its admissions exercise.
“The university hence dissociates itself from any proposals, suggestions, or invitations to take advantage of connections with admission officials, and unequivocally declares such as duplicitous and outrightly fraudulent.
“The public is hereby put on notice that anyone claiming to offer special admission consideration in exchange for letters, payments, or other consideration is engaging in illicit and fraudulent activity, punishable by law. For the avoidance of doubt, both the giver and receiver of any such dubious consideration are complicit in the offense,” she said.
The university management reiterated that it will not hesitate to pursue appropriate legal action against individuals or groups engaging in the above illegal activities or otherwise holding themselves out as agents, representatives, or emissaries to the institution to secure unauthorised admission through fraudulent channels.
The university called on the general public to report any such suspected unauthorised individuals or groups of people to the institution’s communication unit.
The management hence counsels admission seekers into UNILAG to visit the university website for authentic information about admission or any other services.
