The United States Government has committed $32.5 million to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to provide critical food and nutrition assistance to vulnerable populations in Nigeria.
This was contained in a statement issued by the U.S. Embassy in Abuja on Wednesday.
According to the Embassy, the contribution will enable WFP to deliver life-saving food assistance to 764,205 internally displaced persons and other vulnerable groups in Nigeria’s Northeast and Northwest, regions hardest hit by conflict and insecurity.
The Embassy noted that the package includes general food distributions as well as targeted nutrition interventions aimed at reducing malnutrition among vulnerable groups. These include complementary nutrition top-ups for 41,569 pregnant and breastfeeding women and girls, and 43,235 children, through electronic food vouchers.
Millions of people in Nigeria’s conflict-affected states continue to face food insecurity and malnutrition due to violence, displacement, and limited access to basic necessities.
