Tariff slash sparks blackout in Enugu as energy allocation drops by 50 %

Residents of parts of Enugu State have endured four days of power outages due to a sharp drop in electricity supply to Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL), the company confirmed on Monday.

According to MEDL, the disruption stems from a significant reduction in its energy allocation by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC), its parent energy supplier.

The company attributed the development to a recent tariff adjustment by the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC), which slashed the Band A tariff from N209.50/kWh to N160.40/kWh.

MEDL said the new tariff, issued under a fresh Tariff Order, would have led to a monthly revenue shortfall of over N1 billion for EEDC if implemented. As a result, EEDC opted to cut energy supply to MEDL by 50 per cent to mitigate the anticipated losses.

“MEDL does not receive electricity directly from the National Grid but relies solely on EEDC, which holds the vesting contract with the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading (NBET),” the company clarified in a statement.

The limited supply has made it difficult for MEDL to meet the electricity needs of its customers in Enugu.

While apologising for the inconvenience, the company said discussions were ongoing with relevant stakeholders, including EEDC, EERC, NERC, NISO, and NBET, to resolve the issue. MEDL expressed hope that a resolution would be reached within 48 hours or soon after.

The company also acknowledged the delay in communicating the development to customers, attributing it to the late receipt of detailed information on the tariff review and its implications.

MEDL appealed for patience and understanding from affected residents as it works to restore normal service.
