The Nigeria land border with Niger Republic, in Jigawa State is to be shut on Saturday, as part of the measures to ensure credibility of the by-election in the states, and other states in the northern part of the country.
The measure is geared at preventing potential security threats and ensuring that the by-election scheduled for Saturday is conducted without any external interference.
Jigawa State shares border with Niger Republic through several local government areas, including Babura, which is the constituency headquarters of Garki/Babura Federal Constituency and the by-election is scheduled to take place on Saturday in the constituency.
The temporary border closure decision was made known during a meeting between Independent National Electoral Commission officials and heads of security agencies held on Wednesday in Dutse, the state capital.
Also, in related to the bye-election in Kano State, Abdul Zango, the state resident electoral commissioner, has called all members of the State Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security to remain neutral and apolitical during the bye-election.
Similarly, members of the ICCES have been charged to be committed to creating an enabling environment for a free, fair, and credible electoral process during the bye-election.
According to a statement by the Public Relations Officer, Kano Police Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna, the INEC Commissioner made the plea during the ICCES meeting attended by all representatives of security agencies at the command’s headquarters on Wednesday.

Zango commended the collaborative efforts of the security agencies that ensured the success of previous elections and lauded them for their unwavering commitment to electoral security.
In his remarks, the Kano State Police Commissioner, Ibrahim Bakori, assured the public of its unwavering commitment to the safety of lives and property before, during, and after the re-run elections.
“Citizens are encouraged to exercise their civic responsibilities peacefully and report any suspicious activities to the nearest security agency for prompt response,” the statement said.
In his remarks, the Kano State Police Commissioner, Ibrahim Bakori, assured the public of its unwavering commitment to the safety of lives and property before, during, and after the re-run elections.

Haruna said the meeting was convened to review security deployments and set a strategic roadmap for the peaceful conduct of the scheduled Re-run election for Ghari/Tsanyawa State Constituency and the By-election for Bagwai/Shanono State Constituency.
“Today, 13th August 2025, the Kano State Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) reconvened to review security deployments and set a strategic roadmap for the peaceful conduct of the scheduled Re-run election for Ghari/Tsanyawa State Constituency and the By-election for Bagwai/Shanono State Constituency.
“This meeting is essential for us to come together to evaluate the security strategies used in previous elections, identify our successes and challenges, and refine our deployments to guarantee peaceful Re-run and By-elections.
“Plans were finalised to carry out clearance operations across the State, while all necessary security arrangements have been put in place to ensure a transparent and seamless electoral process”, Haruna added.
The meeting had in attendance representatives from the INEC, Police Army, Air Force, Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nigeria Immigration Service and Nigeria Customs Service.
Also in attendance were representatives of the Nigeria Correctional Service, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Federal Road Safety Corps, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Federal Fire Service, Defence Intelligence Agency, and the National Youth Service Corps.
