The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has cautioned air passengers against lodging complaints with the agency over excess luggage charges, stressing that airlines are within their rights to enforce baggage weight limits.

Michael Achimugu, the NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, issued the clarification on Sunday through a post on his official X handle. He stated that the regulator has no authority to compel airlines to waive excess baggage fees.

“Guys, if your luggage is above the weight limit allowed by the airline per passenger, you will pay for the excess luggage. Stop making calls to the NCAA over this. The NCAA cannot force any airline to carry you/your luggage for free. You either ensure to pack the allowable kilograms or pay up,” Achimugu wrote.

Excess baggage charges have remained a frequent source of frustration for Nigerian travellers, particularly on international routes where carriers strictly enforce weight restrictions.

Achimugu’s comments highlight the NCAA’s role as an industry regulator, not an enforcer of passenger waivers, and reinforce the responsibility of travellers to comply with airline baggage policies.
