The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted licence to the Enugu State government for the take-off of the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS) in Igbo-Eno, Enugu State.
Abubakar Rasheed, NUC’s executive secretary presented the licence to the state governor, Ifeanyi Ugwanyi, in Abuja, making it the 219th in the country in the country.
Rasheed congratulated Ugwuanyi and the people of the state “on the establishment of the new university.

He said that the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) were being notified of the establishment of the university.
“Enugu is now joining three other states to establish a university of medical sciences. The first is Ondo State University of Medical Sciences, Ondo; followed by Bayelsa State University of Medical Sciences and then the one in Ebonyi,” he noted.
Reacting, the governor noted that one of the major problems facing the education sector was inadequate tertiary institutions which results in millions missing out on admission every year. He enthused that the state university will address the problem to a good extent.
