Nigerian post offices will stop accepting cash payments from July 1, 2025, as part of efforts to align with the country’s cashless policy objectives.

Tola Odeyemi, the Postmaster-General and chief executive officer of the service, stated that this was part of the Nigeria Postal Service (NIPOST) modernisation agenda.

“All post offices nationwide will cease accepting cash. Customers will transact using approved electronic payment channels,” she said.

According to global payment processing firm Worldpay, cash transactions in Nigeria declined by 59 percent between 2014 and 2024, while electronic payments surged, surpassing N1 quadrillion in 2024 alone.

Odeyemi said the shift to cashless operations will enhance security, improve transparency, and align NIPOST with global best practices. The postmaster general emphasised that NIPOST is embracing the future as it becomes a technology-enabled, citizen-focused institution ready to serve the demands of the digital economy.

Beyond going cashless, the CEO noted that NIPOST does not collect stamp duties, clarifying an age-long misconception.

“Our role is to provide postage stamps, the legal instruments used to authenticate documents and denote duty payment. The responsibility for collecting stamp duties lies solely with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS),” she said.

Odeyemi noted that NIPOST is improving customer engagement and feedback systems to foster transparency and open communication.

“We are introducing a reward and recognition system to promote excellence across our workforce. Simultaneously, we will enforce strict disciplinary measures to address any conduct that undermines public trust or institutional integrity,” she added.
