On Wednesday night, the former Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, met with President Bola Tinubu over the ongoing political crises in Niger.

Sanusi, who served as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, had earlier met with the leaders of the Niger military coup.

Sanusi arrived at the Presidential Villa at about 8.45 pm and was ushered in to meet with the President.

BusinessDay gathered that during the very brief meeting, the former Emir briefed the President on his meeting with the leader of the Niger Coup, Abdourahmane Tiani.

Sanusi gathered from the close-door meeting, reported that the Niger government demands the “restoration of electricity from Nigeria and respect for the country’s sovereignty”.

The meeting with President Tinubu, who is expected to brief the panel of the Authority of Heads of States and Government of ECOWAS in Abuja at their meeting in Abuja, is expected to enrich the organisation’s decision-making process as growing opposition mounts against planned military invasion to force a return to democracy and restoration of the Mohammed Bazoum led administration.

However, it was not immediately apparent whether the government was ready for further talks if these demands were met.

Recall that the Niger government has so far refused to receive any eminent groups from the United States of America, the African Union (AU) and ECOWAS.

BusinessDay gathered that the meeting, which came shortly after the Niger government turned back the United States acting Deputy Secretary, Victoria Nuland, was brokered by the Emir of Damagaran, who s the Emir of the third largest city in Niger.
