NewGlobe, an education technology company has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting states in transforming basic education. This commitment was reiterated by NewGlobe’s Vice President for Policy and Partnerships, Mrs. Ifeyinwa Ugochukwu, at the 2025 State-Level Workshop on Foundational Learning and Out-of-School Children held recently in Abuja. The event was convened by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), in partnership with NewGlobe.
The workshop came against the backdrop of a deepening crisis in Nigeria’s basic education sector. According to UNICEF, over 10 million Nigerian children are currently out of school—the highest number globally. The World Bank further reports that three out of four Nigerian children cannot read and understand a simple passage by age 10. Despite rising enrolment figures, many pupils still leave school without mastering foundational skills.
Discussions at the workshop identified systemic issues as key barriers to progress, including an undervalued teaching workforce, fragmented policy implementation, chronic underfunding, and a misplaced focus on infrastructure over learning outcomes.
Speaking on the urgency of the situation, Mrs. Ugochukwu stated, “If we do not act quickly and deliberately, we will be too late for millions of children.” She described the situation as “a system-wide emergency,” adding, “The evidence is clear: with the right tools, training, and data, foundational learning outcomes can be transformed at scale. We’re supporting states to build resilient, future-ready education systems that deliver measurable results because Nigeria’s children deserve nothing less than a system that works for every learner.”
