…appreciates Tinubu, Makinde, others over his coronation
Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade I, the Alaafin of Oyo, has stated that harmonisation of norms and values embedded in traditional institutions, with the modern system of governance is the only antidote in reducing, if not totally eradicating, the problems of access to justice and conflict resolution in the country.
While declaring his good plans for the people of the ancient town of Oyo and Yorubaland, Alaafin noted that his plans remain unshaken, saying it is imperative because socio-cultural norms embedded in traditional institutions have remained an integral part of the people.
Oba Owoade gave the advice when he received traditional rulers from Ibarapa Area of Oyo State, who paid him a courtesy visit.
Bode Durojaiye, the Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin, quoted the Paramount Ruler as saying that apart from being the powerful human tool for survival, the defined cultural norms and values also form the basIs of existence of every civilized society and they bring order which in turn makes the society devoid of any state of lawlessness.
The Alaafin, who is not just a traditional ruler but also a key figure who should serve as a bridge between traditional institutions and modern governance, said, “the Alaafin stool is a symbol of cultural pride, unity, and the enduring legacy of one of Africa’s most powerful empires.
“The Oyo Empire was once the political and military stronghold of the Yoruba people, renowned for its administrative sophistication, military prowess, and cultural influence. The Alaafin, as the paramount ruler, has always been the custodian of its traditions, the unifying force of the Yoruba people, and a bridge between the past and the future.”
Oba Owoade, who solicited for the same support accorded his predecessor, late Oba Lamidi Oayiwola Adeyemi III, assured the Ibarapa monarchs of following late Oba Adeyemi’s indelible traits.
Oba Jimoh Olajide Titiloye, Asoroolu Ayinla V, the Olu of Igbo-Ora Land, who led other Ibarapa monarchs on the courtesy visit, earlier in his address said “as the Alaafin assumed the sacred responsibility, we are confident that your wisdom, leadership, and dedication will further strengthen the unity and progress of Oyo Kingdom, Yorubaland and Nigeria at large.
“You are on the threshold of history as the successor to Oba Adeyemi III, one of the most influential and longest-reigning monarchs in Yoruba history”.
Meanwhile, the Alaafin has thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Seyi Makinde, traditional rulers, organising committee, and others who graced his coronation ceremony, making it colourful and memorable.
According to a release from Bode Durojaiye the palace’s Director of Media and Publicity Oba Owoade stated in his letter of appreciation to those who participated in the coronation ceremony, where he restated his commitment to promoting the welfare and prosperity of his kingdom and the entire Yoruba race.
Oba Owoade expressed his deepest appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, members of the Federal Executive Council, the Government and good people of Oyo State under the leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde, for their support and goodwill; traditional rulers, dignitaries, and guests for honoring the epoch occasion with their presence.
The Paramount Ruler also appreciated the Yoruba community in the diaspora for their love and support; his subjects, esteemed guests, members of the local organising committee, volunteers, and all those who worked tirelessly to make the ceremony a success.
Alaafin said, “Your presence, support, and goodwill messages have not only touched my heart and filled me with joy, but they have also projected the richness of our cultural heritage and commitment to the legacy of our ancestors.
“The coronation ceremony was a grand success because of your contributions – as our fathers would say, a tree does not make a forest. It is a celebration of our rich Yoruba culture and heritage, and a testament to the enduring bond between our kingdom and the global community.
“As I begin my reign, I am committed to promoting the welfare and prosperity of our kingdom and the entire Yoruba race. I look forward to your continued support and partnership”.
