The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has announced the establishment of a trust fund and automatic employment opportunities for the children of its staff who tragically lost their lives in the recent Afriland Towers inferno.

According to the Service, the trust fund will be dedicated to covering the educational needs of the surviving children of the deceased staff whether they are studying at home or abroad, and regardless of their current level of education.

This was disclosed by Zacch Adedeji, executive chairman of FIRS,, during a solemn memorial service held in honour of the deceased employees who perished in the fire that engulfed the Afriland Towers on Broad Street, Lagos Island, on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.

“This loss is one of the most difficult moments in the history of our Service,” Adedeji stated, reflecting on the deep sense of grief within the FIRS community. “At FIRS, we are not just co-workers we are a family. Their passing leaves a deep void, yet we are comforted by the legacy of service they leave behind.”

He assured the families of the deceased that the Service remains committed to standing by them. “To their families, we extend our deepest condolences. May you be strengthened by the knowledge that your loved ones gave their best in the service of our nation. As an institution, we stand firmly with you and pledge our continued support through this difficult time.”

Adedeji praised the dedication and sacrifice of the fallen staff, noting that their contributions to the nation’s development would not be forgotten. “They lived not for themselves, but for the millions of Nigerians who daily benefit from the dedication and sacrifice of the FIRS family. Their lives remind us that true service is measured by impact, not recognition.”

He concluded with a heartfelt prayer: “We entrust their souls to the Almighty God, praying for eternal rest and for comfort to all who mourn. Their memory will remain with us, inspiring us to greater unity, integrity, and service.”

The deceased were:Ekelikhostse George, assistant director, David Sunday-Jatto, assistant director

The memorial service drew top officials of the revenue agency, grieving family members, and friends of the deceased. Mourners, dressed in black, reflected the sombre mood as they gathered to honour the lives and legacy of their fallen loved ones.
