FEC approves complete renovation of Lagos airport, others

The Federal Executive Council (FEC), on Thursday, approved complete renovation of the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos in Lagos State.

Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, stated this while briefing State House Journalists after the 7th meeting of the Federal Executive Council FEC, presided over by President Bola Tinubu.

Keyamo said FEC approved complete renovation upgrade and remodeling of the International terminal one of the Murtala Mohammed Airport, MM1 and other airports, that would also witness complete repairs, including the repair of the main terminal, access roads and bridges, for a period of 22 month at the total cost of N712 billion.

A breakdown of the complete renovation include the rehabilitation of the runway at the cost of N44 billion for 30 weeks as well as the expansion of the airport park. The Council also approved the construction of 14.6km fencing of the Lagos airport, including installation of CCTV cameras at the cost of N50 billion to be completed within 24 months.

Also approved by FEC, is the rehabilitation to improve the landing system at the Port Harcourt international airport at the cost of N43b and the rehabilitation of runways at the Aminu Kano International Airport, to upgrade the navigational aides, for 24week at N43 billion.

Keyamo said FEC also approved the concessioning of the business phase at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu to make it commercially viable.

Keyamo assured that there would be stakeholders engagements before the actual commencement of the renovation work to reel out new arrangements for passengers and other stakeholders during the period of reconstruction.

Mohammed Pate, Minister of Health and Coordinating Minister of Social Welfare, also announced that Federal Executive Council approved new Oncology Centres in addition to those recently launched by the Government.

“We’re seeing a revolution in terms of the infrastructure and equipment in the Federal Tertiary institutions across our country, the recently launched Oncology centres in Teaching Hospital in Katsina, in Enugu and Benin are just an example of what this President has approved our resources and is already beginning to yield tangible results that Nigerians can see.

“Folks who are unfortunately facing the deadly disease of cancer may choose to use our own resources here in this country, unless somebody chooses to do otherwise, the world class infrastructure that this President has provided can be able to attend to most kinds of cancers, and those are accompanied with human resources.

“Beyond cancer, there are many other investment that this President has provided in federal health institutions so the Nigerians can have the relief that they are seeking for in line with its renewed Hope Agenda and health sector renewal Investment Initiative.

“The approval by the Federal Executive Council today of an additional oncology Centre at the University College Hospital in Ibadan is continuation of this trend of revolutionising the health infrastructure in our country.

“FEC approved the full business case for upgrade of the existing oncology centre at the University College Hospital in Ibadan to be upgraded with its infrastructure to have linear accelerator to provide radiotherapy and many other diagnostic equipment in Ibadan. So that we cater to Nigerians who are suffering from this unfortunate disease of cancer”, he noted.

He stated that additional Oncological Centres are coming up in Lagos, Zaria and Jos that are in the pipeline, alongside many other massive projects.

“This is in addition to the largest hospital that we now have in our country, in the West African region, and perhaps one of the largest in the continent, the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, where this week, more than 10 major projects were commissioned, a neurology centre, a stroke centre, , Heart Centre, stroke centre and an intervention radiology centre and a revamped oncology centre. So this is revolutionary”, he added.
