Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has called on Public Relations professionals to take the lead in rebranding Nigeria and reshaping its image.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Nigerian Public Relations Week, held on Tuesday in Uyo, Governor Eno emphasised the power of strategic communication and positive narrative in driving national development.
Represented by Akon Eyakenyi, the deputy governor, he noted that Public Relations has the ability to distill the best of Nigeria’s values and reposition the Country in the eyes of the World.
He expressed concern over persistent negative reports about Nigeria in local and international media, warning that such portrayals were detrimental to investment, national image and development.
“I believe Public Relations practitioners can work collaboratively with the larger media to market our nation, distill and project the best of our identity, common interests, and ethos.
“The constant drip-drip of negative reporting by a section of the media is not helping our nation. Foreign investors usually get scared of going to countries they perceive or believe to be steeped in conflicts or are experiencing security or societal challenges,” he noted.
The governor urged Nigeria’s media community to take a cue from American media practitioners who according to him, always take a unified stance on issues of national interest, despite ideological differences.
“I have always been impressed by one unique feature of American exceptionalism, and that is the patriotic zeal displayed by the media practitioners, Whether liberal or conservative, on issues that concern the American national interest, they are united in their patriotic patronage and reportage”, he said.
Governor Eno urged PR practitioners to use their platforms to attract investment by highlighting Nigeria’s abundant mineral resources, human capital, innovation, and market potential.
He also showcased Akwa Ibom State as a model for investment, peace, and tourism, pointing to major projects that demonstrate the State’s commitment to development.
He particularly made reference to the unity, peace, and political stability in Akwa Ibom as key enablers of economic growth, noting that such attributes have made the State an attractive destination for both local and international investors.
“We are strategically investing in tourism and the digital economy. I urge you to find time and visit our ARISE Resort, which will easily be the best family-themed resort in the nation, once it is commissioned.
“Our State is safe, secure, and peaceful. Our delicacies remain the best in the nation. Ibom Air is the best Airline in the nation,” Gov. Eno added.
