Francis Nwifuru, the Governor of Ebonyi State, has initiated the construction of an industrial city to address the rising unemployment rate in the state.

Located adjacent to the state’s pipe production company built by former Governor Martin Elechi, this industrial city will feature a well-planned road network, constant and sustainable power supply through independent energy solutions, standardized water treatment and distribution systems, as well as advanced waste management and environmental protection measures.

During the project’s groundbreaking ceremony at the site in Ishiangbo, Ohaukwu Local Government Area, on Tuesday, the Governor expressed that the Industrial City reflects his unwavering commitment to economic revitalization, job creation, and inclusive growth.

He emphasized that the Industrial City is not just a construction project; it is a comprehensive strategy aimed at repositioning the state as a leading destination for industrialization and economic expansion.

“It is designed to accommodate a variety of industries, including manufacturing hubs, technology parks, logistics centres, and export facilities,” he noted.

Through this project, we intend to leverage and add value to our abundant natural resources—solid minerals, agricultural products, and human capital. Our goal is to attract both local and international investors by creating a business-friendly environment with modern infrastructure, thereby generating thousands of direct and indirect jobs to empower our youth and women.”

Furthermore, the Governor stated that the project will promote technological advancement and innovation, stimulate trade, and encourage economic integration both within and beyond the borders of Ebonyi State.

“We chose to situate this project in Ishiangbo because of its strategic location along major transportation corridors and its proximity to raw materials, skilled labour, and markets,” he explained.

The Industrial City will also include broadband internet connectivity and a security infrastructure that ensures the safety of investors, workers, and residents.

“Our government, in collaboration with strategic partners, is committing substantial resources to ensure the successful delivery of these essential infrastructures.

The economic impact of this project is significant. The Ebonyi State Industrial City will catalyse transformative change across the state.

“We are undertaking this initiative because it will strengthen the internally generated revenue (IGR) base of Ebonyi State, reduce rural-to-urban migration by creating wealth and opportunities within local communities, and improve living standards and social amenities in and around Ishiangbo. It will also spur innovation and the development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs),” Nwifuru stated.

Patricia Obila, the state deputy governor who is the chairman of the Exco committee in charge of the project, assured the governor that the project will not exceed the stipulated time with the specification.
