As part of activities to mark the 2021 World Children’s Day, Diatom Impact a subsidiary of Platform Capital Group has launched the ‘Beautiful Ones Are Born’ (BOAB) competition for children in primary and secondary schools across the country.
The BOAB competition is an initiative that allows secondary schools across the country to compete in spelling bee, STEM, and debates with winners going home with exciting prices.
Anna Bethune, director of impact and research, Diatom Impact made this know to journalists recently during a fun party in commemoration of Children Day-themed ‘Unite to Reverse the Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on Children’ organised by the organisation for vulnerable children across five Local Government Areas in Lagos State.
“Today, we are launching the ‘Beautify Ones Are Born’ initiative where secondary schools across Nigeria can apply and compete in spelling bee, STEM, and debates,” Bethune said.

According to her, Diatom and Platform Capital Group have made huge investments in the educational sector because they know and recognize children as the future.
She stated that the organization plans to spend $3million on education in 2021, adding that Diatom will be adopting schools as one of its major projects for the year.
She explained that adopting school projects means supporting schools across the country in need of infrastructural development that supports effective learning.
“We have already identified some schools across the six geo-political zones and we would be adopting them. We are working with schools that need infrastructures such as boreholes, electricity, sewage system, leaking roofs among others and we have already provided 50 students with scholarships,” she said.
“What we are going to be doing moving forward is that we would scale that up to increase the number of children that receive the scholarships,” she further said.
“We are investing in children’s education, infrastructure, developing new learning experiences and we are providing tuition support for students who can’t afford to go to school,” she added.
She noted that Diatom is also operating in the northern region of the country, saying that out of the 15 schools adopted, seven are from the region while calling for a collaborative effort to provide a secure place for children in the north to survive and realize their potential.
Speaking on the significance of Children’s Day, the director of impact said it is an important day as recognizes the importance of children and why they are the future.
“It marks the celebration of children irrespective of their status, location, abilities, or disabilities. It also allows us to remember what is like when we were children.
