Covid-19 pandemic: There is light at the end of the tunnel

The phrases ‘good news’ and ‘coronavirus (COVID19) pandemic’ barely coexist in the same sentence, since the outbreak of the virus early this year. Perhaps it is this lack of optimism that has heightened anxiety across the world. But we can finally change that phenomenon: there is a piece of imminent positive update in relation to the coronavirus pandemic, at last.

Don’t rule out yuletide holiday plans yet

The Paul Ehrlich Institute (PEI), Germany’s research institution, medical regulatory body and the federal institute for vaccines and biomedicines, announced on Thursday, May 14, 2020, that a vaccine against COVID-19 might be ready before the end of the year!

Professor Klaus Cichutek, the PEI’s president, said that “if all these clinical tests would be successful, we could discuss towards the end of this year or early next year”.

The assurance followed PEI’s authorisation of German biotechnology firm, BioNTech to begin testing a possible COVID-19 vaccine on human volunteers.

Another heartwarming news from the United Kingdom indicates that another vaccine developed against Covid-19 has shown favourable outcome with scientists estimating that if they demonstrate the vaccine’s efficacy, it could be ready as soon as September 2020.

The vaccine tagged “ChAdOx1 nCoV-19”, developed by Oxford University scientists had its trial results on rhesus macaque monkeys – believed to be the closest to human beings – to be very encouraging.

To accelerate the process for global impact, British drug maker, AstraZeneca is poised to work with the Oxford developers to produce and distribute 100 million doses of the vaccine by the end of the year.

With a potent vaccine, people are ready to return to their social lives and business with the fullest fervour that human beings are known to enjoy their lives. Are you ready?

Don’t worry; you are covered

It has been two weeks since Nigeria’s president announced the suspension of the total lockdown in the nation’s critical economic hubs- Lagos, Abuja, and Ogun states.

This directive was received with mixed reaction; while some felt it is not yet the right time, others welcomed the news as it signals a gradual return to socio-economic activities, with stronger prospects to get back their livelihood.

Regardless of where one stands on the suspension of the lockdown, no one is foolhardy and gets carried away, the risk of infection remains high.

As a business owner, you most likely would be interacting with potential customers to complete transactions. As an employee, going back to work means exposure to strangers in public commute, some might be asymptomatic conduits who can innocently infect others.

We must take into cognisance that there are still no guarantees to ultimate safety out there for now. But to minimise the risk of likely infection, we need to make sure we follow very strictly all existing safety protocols such as washing our hands regularly, using alcohol-based hand sanitisers, wearing a face mask, and avoiding touching our faces.

What is clear, however, is that with the severity of the economic meltdown this virus has already impacted globally, individuals, organisations, social and religious setups are eager for a return to productive endeavours.

Many have already lost their jobs, while some businesses on the brink of bankruptcy, with stunted incomes, have either slashed employees pay or are completely in no position to pay one, thereby leaving an increasing number of families financially strained.
