Anambra CP calls for probe into fire outbreaks in Onitsha Main Market

IIkioye Orutugu, the Anambra State ccommissioner of police has called for tripartite committee to look into the incessant fire outbreak at the Onitsha Main Market.

Orutugu said the committee would discuss and proffer solution to the incidences of fire in the market.

He said the tripartite committee would be make up of the police, market men and women and the government representatives.

He made the call on Monday during on spot assessment of the fire outbreak at ifejika Warehouse by Bida Road of the Main Market.

According to him, it is so saddened that the destruction of goods are happening in the such popular market in the country.

“Already we have security issues ,let us face it . But a situation where goods worth billions are burt everytime affects individuals and the state economy.

“if the market continues to be burnt, buying and selling will be diverted to another place. If we begin to hear about burning of goods it means that buying and selling will suffer and move to other place. We don’t have oil and gas in the state. It is through the buying and selling that we raise money to fund projects in the state ” he added.

He also accused some of the traders of supporting sit at home, noting that any person who want to be poor should continue to support the sit at home.

“Nobody who is conscious about the survival of the state and himself will support the sit-at-home any longer,” he affirmed.

Orutugu stressed that the sit-at- home is crippling the economy of the state.

He admitted that many of the traders are ready and Willing to come to markets on Mondays, but are afraid of insecurity.

“The security situation is improving in the state as the police and government are doing everything possible to ensure security in place so that they will be coming market every Monday.

He, however, said the police is negotiating with the state and federal governments to improve the presence of security and amenities to fight crimes.

“Easter is coming up, you should open your shops and make sells and enjoy yourself. We will provide you with security for your legitimate business, ” he said.
