Sidi Ould Tah, President, African Development Bank (AfDB), has used the 80th United Nations General Assembly to call for stronger global partnerships and scaled-up financing to accelerate Africa’s development goals, according to a statement by the bank

At a series of high-level meetings and sideline events, Ould Tah outlined his four-point agenda: strengthening Africa’s financial architecture, promoting self-sufficiency, turning population growth into a driver of job creation, and investing in climate-resilient infrastructure.

“Africa has shown remarkable resilience, but the current global context demands that development partners build a new African financial system, drawing on each other’s strengths,” he said after talks with Amina Mohammed, UN Deputy Secretary-General.

The AfDB president also met Diene Keita, Executive Director, UNFPA, reaffirming the bank’s commitment to maternal health and youth empowerment, and held discussions with Botswana’s President Duma Gideon Boko on economic diversification and regional trade corridors.

In addition, Shakhboot Nahyan Al Nahyan UAE, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, pledged his country’s full support for the bank’s mission.

On Wednesday, Tah was scheduled to take part in the launch of Mission 300, a joint World Bank–AfDB initiative to provide electricity access to 300 million Africans by 2030.

He joined a trilateral meeting with African Union Commission Chair Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and UNECA Executive Secretary Claver Gatete on continental development priorities.

The AfDB president is also using the New York platform to rally support for the upcoming 17th replenishment of the African Development Fund (ADF), the bank’s concessional window that finances projects in 37 low-income African countries. Several African states have already pledged support ahead of the December negotiations.
