The Adamawa State Government has approved N3 billion for the procurement of agricultural inputs as part of a wide-reaching initiative aimed at enhancing food production and improving food security across the state.
The programme, which was unveiled recently, includes the distribution of fertilizers, high-quality seeds, and other critical inputs to farmers in all the local government areas. It is specifically designed to empower smallholder farmers, with a strong focus on supporting youth and women.
In an exclusive interview with our correspondent, David F Jatau, Commissioner for Agriculture, Adamawa State, noted that the government has developed 300 hectares of farmland in each of the local government areas that would be allocated to 300 beneficiaries per LGA under a targeted empowerment scheme.
“A committee has already been constituted to finalize the list of beneficiaries,” the commissioner explained.
“This will be done in collaboration with traditional councils, local government officials, security agencies, and representatives of youth and women groups to ensure transparency and inclusiveness.”
According to Jatau, the initiative is expected to significantly boost food production, combat hunger, and promote economic stability throughout Adamawa State.
To strengthen the programme, the state government, according to him, is partnering with non-governmental organizations and agricultural development agencies, with some organisations already pledging to cultivate over 2,700 hectares of land across multiple LGAs in support of the initiative.
The programme will also offer technical assistance to participating farmers, including the deployment of trained agricultural extension workers who will provide guidance on modern farming techniques and best practices.
“This is not just about providing inputs,” the he added. “It is about equipping our farmers, especially young people and women with the tools and knowledge they need to thrive.”
The Adamawa agricultural initiative is set to roll out in phases over the coming months, with the first wave of distributions and land preparations expected to begin shortly.
