…World bank to build smart-inclusive system
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has reiterated its readiness to establish functional emergency preparedness and response structures across all Local Government Areas which will enhance disaster coordination, data management and early warning capabilities at sub-national levels.
The two-day stakeholders training was organised by NEMA and World Bank Group in collaboration with Borno State Government to arm them with emergency response skills.
Zubaida Umar, Director General of NEMA, speaking during the opening remarks at a two-day the Emergency Preparedness and Response Stakeholders Engagement Workshop held in Maiduguri on Monday.
Zubaida Umar emphasised the importance of strategic planning in ensuring timely and efficient emergency response.
Zubaida represented by its Director Planning and Research Forcasting, Bamidele Onimode, said the training for stakeholders was to define their roles and responsibilities in mitigating risks and effective response during emergencies at the grassroots level.
She reiterated the Agency’s commitment to enhancing national resilience through proactive planning and multi-agency collaboration.
She said, “As we begin this two-day engagement, let us reflect on how far we have come, and more importantly, on how much more we can achieve together.
“I trust that the discussions, technical sessions, and planning dialogues that will take place here will further consolidate the progress we have collectively built across the federation. Together, let us continue to move from reaction to preparedness, from coordination to resilience, and from intention to sustainable”, Zubaida.
The World Bank Country Director represented by Oluwaseun Olowoporoku said the World Bank remains committed to supporting Borno State through technical assistance, operational support, and knowledge exchange, ensuring that together, ”
He said, “The World Bank is supporting this process in Borno State with a sense of urgency and responsibility. Global experience demonstrates that every dollar invested in preparedness saves multiple dollars in response and recovery costs, while protecting lives and livelihoods.
“This is a moment for innovation, collaboration, and concrete action. We build an Emergency Preparedness and Response system that is smart, inclusive, and effective for the people of Borno State.”
Oluwaseun commended the Government of Borno State for its commitment to safeguarding lives, livelihoods and infrastructure from the growing threats of climate and disaster risks.
Also, Ali Abdullahi Isa, Borno State Emergency Management Agency thanked the NEMA for its leadership and commitment in safeguarding the lives and livelihoods of people, assuring that Borno state government would continue to sustain collaboration and synergy with NEMA and other relevant agencies.
