NCC committed to increasing internet access
NCC, The Nigerian Communication Commission, has assured Nigerians that it will continue to embark on various initiatives to increase internet access to Nigerians for positive engagements.
Director, Consumer Affairs Bureau, NCC, Mrs Felicia Onwiegbulam gave this assurance in Warri, weekend, during one of its awareness campaigns on the need for Telecom consumers to know their rights.
She said it was their responsibility as telecom regulators to jointly address contemporary issues generating interest in the industry.
“Since we started this event some years back, we have treated different thematic topics which have produced key resolutions that that have been communicated to service providers for implementation.
“Indeed this has helped to gaurantee improved services for consumers. In essence, telecoms consumers have been the ultimate beneficiaries of this important event over the years,” she said.
She said the internet touches all aspects of our lives as telecoms consumers, adding that there was need for telecoms providers to ensure that consumers get value for their money.
“It is a common knowledge that smartphones and other smart devices used by telecoms consumers are a storehouse of data carrying sensitive information about their owners, their families, businesses, associates, daily interactions as well as financial transactions details,” Onwiegbulam said.
The NCC Director further said that the commission was committed to using the various outreach programmes to embark on series of awareness campaigns with a view to the keeping consumers well informed on the risks associated with being online.
While noting that there was no doubt that Cybercrime was on the increase, she hoped that service providers represented at the occasion had demonstrated clearly measures consumers need to take to safeguard them against Cybercrime.
She however, enjoined Telecom consumers present at the occasion to take full advantage of the information gathered and protect themselves from cyber attacks.
Highlight of the program was an interactive session where NCC, Telecom consumers, and telecom providers brainstormed on how to improve services and how everyone can benefit from the programme.
