…unveils maiden DGCA sports week
In an effort to promote workplace wellness, foster staff unity, and enhance productivity, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has unveiled the maiden edition of the DGCA Sports Week.
Rebecca Enyiuche Aghadinazu, Director of Corporate Services, who was entrusted with overseeing the event, Speaking during a press briefing ahead of the opening ceremony, described the Sports Week as a crucial platform to encourage healthy living, resilience and staff engagement.
According to her, the sports festival is set to become an annual event due to its numerous benefits. “Sports improve our well-being and foster teamwork, bonding, and discipline. Many of our staff hardly interact across departments or regions, but this event will break those barriers,” she explained.
The event, first of its kind in the Authority’s 25-year history, kicks off on Monday, June 23, and runs through Saturday, June 29, 2025, it will take place at the Nigerian Air Force Base Sports Complex, Airport Road, Abuja.
It will feature over 300 athletes drawn from NCAA’s headquarters and regional offices in Abuja, Lagos, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Enugu. Competitions will include Football, Swimming, Chess, Table Tennis, Ayo, Squash, Handball, Badminton, and other indoor sports.
“We feel that the Directorate should have this competition from time to time, and the DGCA graciously approved it. We are starting on Monday with a full schedule of events, and everyone across the regions is involved,” she said.
She also highlighted the role of sports in relieving work-related stress and creating a happier, more connected workforce. “This is not just a one-off. We are committed to making this an annual tradition because of the value it brings,” she added.
Razak Sowunmi, Chairman of the NCAA Sports Club, also emphasized the significance of sports in balancing professional responsibilities with physical and mental health.
“You must be on top of your health and mindset to regulate properly,” he stated, adding that facilities are in excellent condition, security is assured, and healthcare personnel will be on standby throughout the event.
Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, commended Chris Najomo, DG NCAA for championing staff welfare since assuming office. He noted that the Sports Week aligns with the DGCA’s commitment to building a healthier, more productive regulatory workforce.
“One of the promises he made was to ensure staff are fit and well-insured. He’s fulfilling that by giving us this platform for fitness and unity, Today, we are proudly presenting the maiden edition of the DGCA Sports Week to the world,” Achimugu said.
He added that the opening ceremony is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Monday, and the event is expected to set a new standard in NCAA’s employee engagement and wellness efforts.
