Akwa Ibom State Government has donated a land to the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) for the development of a Forward Operational Base (FOB) and barracks infrastructure, in a bid to boost its operational capabilities within the South-South region.
In a statement signed by Ehimen Ejodame, Air Commodore Director of Public Relations and Information, Nigerian Air Force, the land donation, hailed by Hasan Abubakar, Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), as a pivotal gesture towards enhancing national security, will enable the NAF to deepen its air power projection and maritime surveillance capabilities in a region critical to Nigeria’s economic and security interests.
It noted that during a courtesy visit to Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, Governor of Akwa Ibom State, in Uyo on Wednesday, Abubakar described the initiative as a “strategic masterstroke” that will significantly strengthen the nation’s defence architecture in the Gulf of Guinea corridor.

“The establishment of this Forward Operational Base is more than a military initiative. It is a signal of assurance to citizens and investors alike that Nigeria is serious about protecting its people, its territorial integrity, and the economic lifelines that run through the South-South,” the CAS stated.
He further emphasized that the new base would not only enhance Nigeria’s operational response to maritime threats, oil infrastructure sabotage, and transnational crimes but also encourage civil development, increase investor confidence, and boost tourism in the coastal region.
Abubakar applauded the Akwa Ibom State Government for its proactive stance on security matters, saying, “Your Excellency, your commitment to security, collaboration, and development speaks volumes.
“Our partnership here extends beyond air operations; it is about investing in the future of our country and leaving behind a more secure and resilient Nigeria.”
He also reaffirmed the Nigerian Air Force’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property in Akwa Ibom and beyond, noting that the increased NAF presence in the state will complement ongoing national and regional security efforts.
In response, Umo Eno expressed gratitude for the visit and lauded the NAF’s growing role in the region’s security.
He pledged his administration’s continued support, reiterating the shared responsibility of securing the state and the country at large.
“We are honoured to contribute to national security through this partnership.
“A safe and secure society is the foundation of every meaningful development, and we are glad to align with the Nigerian Air Force to achieve this goal”, the governor said.
As part of his official engagements, the CAS also visited the palace of His Royal Majesty, Obong Edidem Charles D. Abia, FCA (Attah Ekid Afid), the Paramount Ruler of Eket Local Government Area.

There, Abubakar underscored the indispensable role of traditional institutions in maintaining peace and facilitating cooperation between communities and security agencies.

“We stand ready to support all efforts that promote peace, security, and development.
Together, we shall build enduring bridges for the benefit of our people and the progress of Nigeria”, he said.
