At least, about seven persons lost their lives in multiple accidents in Lagos and Ogun State Saturday.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has reported the death of one person and multiple injuries to two others in an accident at Cele bus stop along Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, Lagos.
Similarly, another tragic accident occurred at Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministry headquarters (MFM) outbound Lagos, on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The devastating accident claimed multiple lives as a Vanagon bus attempting to maneuver between two petroleum tankers was crushed, resulting in fatalities.
Six people lost their lives in the accident, which happened when a gas truck exiting NIPCO collided with the bus and a fuel tanker.
At the time of filing this report, emergency service workers have removed the 14-seater bus from the scene of the crash that occurred in front of the NIPCO Gas Station, opposite the MFM camp.
LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, confirmed the incident in a statement issued to the press on Saturday.
According to Bakare-Oki, the collision involved a fully-loaded 40-foot containerized truck, five commercial buses, and two private vehicles—a Camry and a Sienna minivan.
The accident led to the death of a pedestrian and left two others with varying degrees of injuries.
“Preliminary findings from on-site investigations indicate that the heavy-duty truck, conveying two large containers, suffered a catastrophic brake failure while travelling at an excessive speed.
“The resulting loss of control led to the dislodgement of the containers, which subsequently collapsed onto five commercial buses and a pair of private vehicles, causing significant structural damage and human casualties.
“One of the commercial bus drivers sustained multiple compound fractures to both his arm and leg, while the remaining injured parties were promptly evacuated by LASAMBUS to the General Hospital, Isolo medical facility for immediate and comprehensive treatment.
“Officers of LASTMA responded with commendable alacrity, orchestrating an efficient rescue operation in concert with the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority Response Unit, Federal Road Safety Corps and sympathetic members of the public,” he said.
He further stated that their prompt intervention facilitated the rapid rescue of the injured and the restoration of traffic flow on the heavily affected expressway.
Additionally, security officers from the Ijeshatedo Police Division were dispatched to offer tactical support and ensure order during the emergency response.
Bakare-Oki expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
He also called on motorists to strictly adhere to posted speed limits and traffic regulations designed to ensure safety on the roads.
