Jimmy Eboma, founder and CEO of EMOSIM, is at the forefront of Africa’s digital revolution. With a vision to redefine global connectivity, EMOSIM is empowering individuals and businesses to stay connected across borders without unnecessary costs or complexity. In this exclusive interview with IFEOMA OKEKE-KORIEOCHA, Eboma shares his insights on the future of travel tech, importance of digital innovation, and EMOSIM’s expansion plans.
What inspired you to invest in EMOSIM, and what’s your vision for the company’s future?
What inspired me to invest in EmoSIM was the belief that Africa can also provide world-class solutions to global challenges. Too often, we look outward for innovation, but I wanted to be part of something that proves we can build solutions right here that serve both Africans and the world.
Equally important is the human element. Connectivity is no longer a luxury, it is a necessity. The assurance that you can travel across borders and still maintain seamless communication with your loved ones and networks is powerful. That ability to remain connected at all times is at the heart of what EmoSIM stands for.
My vision for EMOSIM goes beyond providing eSIMs. This is only the starting point of a much bigger journey. We are laying the foundation for a future where EmoSIM becomes a complete digital connectivity ecosystem, powering travel, commerce, and communication across Africa and beyond. Our ultimate goal is to redefine how people experience connectivity, giving them the freedom to move, live, and do business without barriers.
How does EMOSIM align with Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda, and what role do you see it playing in the country’s tech ecosystem?
EmoSIM’s story is closely tied to Nigeria’s broader digital transformation journey. The seed for EmoSIM was planted at a time when conversations around the Global System of Mobile Communication (GSM) were beginning to gain real ground in Nigeria. We took the initiative early, and it is no surprise that out of more than 40 MVNO companies that were commissioned, EmoSIM is one of the few still thriving today. That success is the result of having both a clear vision and the right technical backbone through our partnership with Tata Communications.
As for our role, we see EMOSIM as more than just a service provider, we are an enabler of Nigeria’s digital economy. By ensuring seamless connectivity for travellers, businesses, and everyday users, we are helping to unlock new opportunities, fuel innovation, and strengthen Nigeria’s position in the global tech ecosystem.
What sets EmoSIM apart from other global connectivity solutions, and how do you plan to maintain a competitive edge?
What sets EmoSIM apart from other global connectivity solutions is our focus on affordability without compromising quality. We built EmoSIM on the belief that seamless global connectivity should not be an unattainable luxury, but an accessible service for everyone, business travelers, students, pilgrims, digital nomads, and families alike.
For example, where a competitor might charge six dollars for a seven-day package, EmoSIM offers the same for five dollars. Beyond that, we have taken it a step further with our global plan, one number that works seamlessly across more than 180 destinations for calls, SMS, and data.
Importantly, we do not just stop at competitive pricing; we make the experience convenient. With EmoSIM, you pay in your local currency, eliminating hidden conversion costs. This is part of our commitment to making global connectivity not only affordable but also simple and stress-free.
Can you elaborate on the partnership with Tata Communications and how it enhances EMOSIM’s offerings?
Our partnership with Tata Communications is one of the strongest pillars of EMOSIM’s success. From the very beginning, we knew that delivering a solution at a global standard would require more than vision, it needed a robust and reliable technical backbone. What this partnership brings is both credibility and capability. Tata operates one of the world’s leading digital ecosystems, with infrastructure that spans more than 200 facilities worldwide. By tapping into that backbone, EMOSIM is able to guarantee reliability, scalability, and seamless connectivity across over 190 destinations. In essence, Tata enhances our offerings by allowing us to combine local insight with global reach.
How does the eSIM technology work, and what benefits does it offer users compared to traditional SIM cards or international roaming?
Think of an eSIM as your regular SIM card, just without the plastic. Instead of inserting a chip, the SIM is already embedded in your phone and can be activated digitally with something as simple as scanning a QR code. It does everything your current SIM does, calls, SMS, and data, only without the hassle of queues, paperwork, or swapping SIM cards.
The benefits are significant. First, convenience: travelers can set up their connectivity before they even board their flight and land abroad fully connected. Second, flexibility: with an eSIM, you can have multiple plans on one device, switching easily between local and international networks. Third, cost savings: by using EMOSIM instead of traditional roaming, users avoid exorbitant roaming charges and pay local-like rates wherever they go.
In short, eSIM technology offers the same reliability as a traditional SIM, but with greater convenience, flexibility, and affordability, making it the smarter choice for today’s global traveller.
What are your plans for expanding EMOSIM’s services beyond Nigeria, and how do you see the company evolving in the next few years?
EmoSIM is already operating far beyond Nigeria. In just three months since launch, we have established a physical presence across the SADC region including South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia, Mozambique, Eswatini, Lesotho, Angola, Malawi, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. At the same time, our service is accessible to travelers in over 190 countries worldwide, underscoring the truly global scale of our operations.
If this level of growth and footprint can be achieved in just three months, imagine what the next year will look like. Our ultimate goal is clear: to position EMOSIM as the go-to connectivity solution for anyone travelling within Africa and across the globe, delivering affordability, reliability, and convenience on a scale never before seen.
What drives your passion for innovation and entrepreneurship in the tech industry?
I have always believed that Africa has the talent and creativity to build innovations that stand shoulder to shoulder with the best in the world. The rapid rise of technologies like AI, IoT, and digital platforms shows us where the world is headed, and my passion is ensuring that Africans are not just consumers of that future, but creators of it.
With EMOSIM, the focus is on solving a very real need: keeping people connected across borders without unnecessary cost or complexity. For me, it is more than business, it is about empowerment. If we can give travellers the freedom to move, work, and connect without barriers, then we are contributing to Africa’s digital story in a meaningful way. That is what excites me, and that is what keeps me pushing forward.
What advice would you give to young entrepreneurs or professionals looking to make a mark in the tech industry?
My advice to young entrepreneurs is simple: start with purpose, not just profit. The tech industry rewards those who solve real problems, so focus on building solutions that make people’s lives better.
Also, resilience is non-negotiable. The journey will test you, but if you stay committed to your vision, keep learning, and adapt quickly, the opportunities in tech are limitless. Africa is still at the beginning of its digital story, and the next big innovations can come from anyone bold enough to dream and disciplined enough to execute.
