Maryam Shehu Mohammed is currently the company secretary and legal adviser at Mafab Communications Limited and served as the company secretary and legal adviser of Kaduna Electricity Distribution Plc. She was the Deputy Group Company Secretary at the Abuja Investments Company Limited and the Company Secretary, Abuja Urban Mass Transport Company Limited. Prior to this, she launched into her career as a prosecutor at the Ministry of Justice, Kaduna State.
She is a life member of the Institute of Directors (IOD), a chartered secretary with the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSAN) and a faculty member of both institutions. She is a member of the Financial Reporting Council, a Certified Board Evaluator and auditor and a corporate governance expert.
Maryam is an alumna of USAID’s Power Africa Nigeria Power Sector Programme for Women in Management and Lagos Business School’s Non-Profit Leadership and Management Programme. She became a member of the Chartered Institute of Corporate Administrators in 2016 and is a 2015 Associate of the Nigeria Leadership Initiative (NLI). Maryam is a 2014 Mandela Washington Fellow, Morgan State University, Baltimore, USA. President Obama’s fellowship for the top 1% (500) young African leaders.
She has been in active legal practice since 2004 and as both a prosecutor and in-house counsel, handles cases at high court and court of appeal as well as arbitration panels. Her experiences span different sectors strengthening her passion in corporate governance and organisational leadership. She has supported several Boards in structuring and establishing global best corporate governance practices.
Maryam has held many Committee positions at the Nigerian Bar Association and FIDA Kaduna Branch levels.
Maryam obtained her PhD, LLM and LLB from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria between 1997 and 2019 and the Nigerian Law School Abuja Campus between 2003 and 2004 where she obtained her B.L. Maryam obtained a Masters in Leadership Studies from the Nigerian Defense Academy’s Postgraduate School in 2020. She holds a Diploma in International Commercial Arbitration from The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, London, UK and is a Fellow of the Institute.
Maryam’s PhD research at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria was focused on “Analysing the Legal Framework for the delivery of Public Private Partnership Projects in Nigeria”. Her LLM research was focused on the protection of human rights under the criminal justice administration in Kaduna State. Her Masters in Leadership research was on ‘Gender Participation in Leadership Portfolios in the Nigerian Power Sector, a case study of Kaduna Electric.’
Maryam is the founder of Charity to Cheer Foundation, a non-governmental organisation that focuses on facilitating access to medical care for the destitute and caters for the welfare of orphans.
