Lovers of fashion were thrilled recently at the launch of Kinabuti’s “Vlisco Carnival in the Desert” collection that featured enormous collection of stylish stitches made by the Italian but Nigerian based Kinabuti fashion house.
The launch hosted by Italian Consulate Lagos was in commemoration of the Milan Fashion Week held every April 25 in Milan, the fashion capital of Italy.
The collection consisting of both male and female designs is inspired by joy, happiness, and is a celebration of life and God. This theme is demonstrated through the shining and vibrant colours similar to those used by women of the desert regions such as the blue desert of Egypt, Piscinas of Italy, Sahara desert in Africa and Rajasthan in India.
Proudly presented by Pernod Richard, producers of Martell Cognac, the collection, born and inspired by the Calabar Carnival can agreeably be described as both colourful and whimsical through the fusion of the most unique prints.
Commenting on her designs, Caterina Bortulossi, Italian designer and creative director of Kinabuti noted that her Kinabuti 2013 collection “Vlisco Carnivals in the Desert” is something that speaks volume of style, cross pollination of cultures in fashion and creative way of recreating fashion for today’s dressers.
She embraces various textures, shapes, and colours with fluid asymmetrical hemlines, Grecian inspired floor length pieces along with a use of fabrics ranging from silk; which for the first time printed by Kinabuti, to leather and the prime quality Vlisco African prints.

The colours of the collection range from sorbets and sherbets palette to every hue you can think of with details of heavy embellished beadwork, gemstones, and metallics adding a playful, sparkly and edgy twist to each piece.
Kinabuti label has cultivated a niche for catering to the needs of the modern individual. Whilst the structured tailoring adheres to the principles of precision and unmatched finishing, the brand appeals to the diverse lifestyle of the modern day client hence becoming the label of choice for trendy people in Nigeria.
However, Stefano De Leo, console general of the Italian Consulate in Lagos, the host of the event, noted that the consulate used the occasion of the fashion week to create a platform for further networking among its citizens and their Nigerian counterparts in business, cultural and even diplomatic issues.
