Meadow Hall College of Education recently held its 4th convocation ceremony, exploring the changing role of educators in a rapidly evolving digital world. Themed “Educators in the Digital Age: Balancing Tradition with Innovation,” the event focused on how traditional teaching practices can work hand in hand with emerging technologies to enhance learning outcomes.

While foundational skills, discipline, and human interaction have long been at the heart of education, the rise of digital tools and artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming how knowledge is delivered. Speakers at the event called for a balanced approach—one that embraces innovation without losing the human essence of teaching.

Dr. Kehinde Nwani, Founder and CEO of Meadow Hall Group and Provost of the College, opened the ceremony with a keynote address centred on the theme. She highlighted the potential of AI in personalising learning, automating administrative tasks, enhancing access to resources, and identifying learning gaps more effectively. However, she cautioned that educators must remain at the heart of the learning experience.

“Passion, character development, ethics, curiosity, emotional intelligence, cultural wisdom and shared human values—these are human traits no machine can replicate,” she said, encouraging graduates to use technology as a tool, not a crutch.

The Special Guest of Honour, Mrs Ibukun Awosika, echoed this sentiment, stating that no amount of technological advancement can replace the nurturing role of a teacher. “There is no technology that can hug a child or recognise the silent cry of a troubled learner,” she said. She further emphasised that the teacher is the one who nurtures life, and that cannot be digitised.

Adding to the discussion, guest lecturer Professor David Imhonopi of Covenant University reminded attendees that, regardless of technological shifts, core educational skills remain timeless. “Reading, writing, critical thinking, and problem-solving are components of education that transcend technological advancement,” he stated.

Engineer Ibikunle Ogunbayo, Chairman, Governing Council of the College, also highlighted the role of technology in education, noting that “AI should be viewed as a means to support teachers in facilitating learning, not replacing them.”

Dr Bimbo Okunola, representing the Registrar of the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), commended Meadow Hall College of Education for its exceptional performance in the recent Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE), achieving an impressive 89.2% pass rate—the highest in the country.

Distinguished guests at the event included Mr. Tunde Lemo (OFR), former Deputy Governor of CBN and Chairman, Titan Trust Bank; Princess Adaobi Ekwuno, TRCN Lagos Coordinator; and senior academics from UNILAG, including Professors Bayo Oladipo, Joseph Awoyinfa, and Funsho Olatunde.

The convocation also celebrated academic excellence, with outstanding students receiving awards for their achievements. The Best Graduating Student for the PDE July 2023/2024 Cohort was Egbogu Elijah Hyicenth, while the Best Graduating Student for the PDE January 2024 Cohort was Okeke Anita Uchenna. The Best Graduating Student for the PDECE 2024 Class was Chikezie Godwin Grace, and the Best Graduating Student for the ADELM 2023/2024 Class was Eli Ijeoma Ann. The Award for Excellence in Project Writing for the PDE July 2023/2024 Cohort was given to David Ijeoma Stella, and the Award for Excellence in Project Writing for the PDE January 2024 Cohort was presented to Mbadinuju Aviva Nnanneka.

Since its establishment in 2021, the College has shown consistent growth — graduating 85 students in its first set in 2022, 95 in 2023, and 125 in 2024. This year, that number has increased to 162 graduates, underscoring the institution’s growing impact and its commitment to training exceptional teachers who will deliver holistic, high-quality education. As AI continues to reshape learning, the institution remains dedicated to equipping future educators to integrate technology while upholding strong ethical and teaching standards.
