Enugu airline begins commercial operations May 29

…As govt unveils plans to boost tourism, transport infrastructure

The Enugu State government has announced that it received two aircraft for the newly established Enugu Air, with a third expected by May 24, 2025, adding that commercial operations were scheduled to begin before May 29, 2025, marking a major milestone ahead of the administration’s second anniversary.

It has also approved a series of projects such as the establishment of an Electric and Compressed Natural Gas
(CNG) Automotive Manufacturing Plant and major tourism infrastructure developments across the state to make Enugu a tourism hub.

The approval was granted during the State Executive Council meeting held at the Enugu State Government House, presided over by Governor Peter Mbah.

Briefing journalists at the end of the Exco meeting, Commissioner for Transport, Obi Ozor in company of Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Ugochi Madueke, announced that there were significant progress in the state’s Smart Transport Programme.

They said that plans were in top gear for the establishment of an Electric and CNG Automotive Manufacturing Plant in Enugu State.The initiative will also see the deployment of over 2,000 electric vehicles within 150 days, as part of the Enugu Smart Transport Programme.

“In support of green mobility, the commissioners revealed that 50 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses have already arrived in the state, with another 50 due in two weeks,” the commissioners said.

The state, they said, would begin development of landmark tourist attractions. Among the first-phase projects would be a 600-metre canopy walkway at the historic Nsude Pyramids in Udi Local Government Area — expected to be the longest in Nigeria and the first in the South East.

“Additionally, a 50-metre Cross of Hope will be constructed at Okpatu, sitting at an altitude of 580 metres above sea level. In the same Udi LGA, the scenic Ngwo Pine Forest will host Nigeria’s first 300-metre zip line, offering adventure tourism to visitors and locals alike.”

Meanwhile, preparations are underway for the 23rd National Sports Festival scheduled to hold in Enugu in 2026. According to the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, who also spoke to journalists work is set to begin at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and the Awgu Games Village to ensure the facilities are ready for the prestigious national event.

These developments underscore the Mbah administration’s commitment to infrastructural development, economic diversification, and sustainable innovation across Enugu State.
