Barcelona have confirmed that star striker Robert Lewandowski has sustained a left thigh injury and is doubtful for the Champions League semi-final clash against Inter Milan.
The 36-year-old Polish forward was forced off, clutching the back of his leg, during Barça’s thrilling 4-3 comeback victory over Celta Vigo on Sunday night.
Hamstring strain confirmed
On Monday, the club released a formal statement confirming that medical tests revealed an injury to the semitendinosus muscle in his left thigh, effectively diagnosing a hamstring strain.
While Barcelona did not specify a recovery timeline, they stated his return to training will depend on the progression of the injury.
Spanish media outlets, however, suggest that this type of muscular issue typically requires a minimum of three weeks out of action. The Spanish-language version of the statement even referred to it as a “lesion,” implying a more serious setback than a standard strain.
Key absence ahead of Inter showdown
Lewandowski is Barcelona’s top scorer this season, netting 40 goals in 48 appearances across all competitions, including 11 in the Champions League, making him a central figure in Xavi’s squad.
The first leg of the Champions League semi-final is set for Wednesday, April 30, at Camp Nou, with the return fixture at San Siro on Tuesday, May 6.
His absence would be a major blow to Barcelona’s hopes of progressing to the final.
Barcelona injury list grows
Barcelona are already contending with an injury-hit squad. Alejandro Balde, Marc-André ter Stegen, Marc Bernal, and Marc Casadó are all expected to miss the semi-final ties, leaving Xavi with limited options.
Lewandowski’s condition will be closely monitored in the coming days, but his participation in the semi-final appears increasingly unlikely.
