A June 12 protest marking Nigeria’s Democracy Day has commenced in Abuja, with demonstrators gathering to voice their discontent over worsening economic hardship and rising insecurity across the country.
Security agencies are stationed at various points, with heavily armed personnel at key points across Abuja.
Their presence was especially prominent at major intersections and around the National Assembly complex – areas considered likely gathering spots for demonstrators.
Despite the security buildup, the protest began in the Apo district of the capital.
There, demonstrators assembled, chanting solidarity songs and holding placards as they voiced their frustrations.
