…calls for nationwide reflection as world marks human rights day
Agunbiade Babatunde, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ayobo-Ipaja LCDA in Alimosho, Lagos State and philanthropist has called on all government agencies, civil society organizations, schools, religious institutions, and community leaders to join hands in spreading human rights education.
Agunbiade who spoke as the world marked Human Rights Day urged media stakeholders, civic groups, and all Nigerians to use the occasion to deepen awareness on the fundamental rights as guaranteed to every citizen.
While urging governments to up strategic investment in social sectors, uphold the guiding principles of participation, inclusivity, and equity, he noted that
“understanding one’s rights is the first step towards building a peaceful and progressive nation.”
Emphasizing that Human Rights Day is not just another date on the calendar, he noted that human rights were essential for peace, stability, and sustainable development, and that protecting the rights of women, children, minorities, and other vulnerable groups was a concrete investment in Nigeria’s future.
Agunbiade, who is the founder of Agunbiade Babatunde(ADABA) Foundation, stated that this year’s commemoration provides an opportunity for citizens to re-engage with the principles of equality, fairness, and justice that form the foundation of a democratic society.
Commending the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu noted that the administration has continued to express commitment towards strengthening democratic institutions, upholding the rule of law, and protecting the rights of citizens.
He highlighted ongoing national reforms aimed at improving security, expanding civic freedoms, and ensuring that government agencies operate within the framework of constitutional rights.
“As Nigeria continues on the path of development under President Tinubu’s leadership, we must work together to build a country where justice prevails, where institutions serve the people, and where every citizen is empowered to live freely and safely,” he said.
According to him, Human Rights Day should remind every Nigerian, young or old, male or female, privileged or vulnerable, that the Constitution guarantees their freedom of expression, their right to live in dignity, their right to participate in governance, and their right to seek justice when wronged. These rights must be known, protected, and respected at all times.
Agunbiade called on citizens to use this day to reflect on how they treat one another, encouraging Nigerians to promote tolerance, fairness, and responsibility in their daily interactions.
He stressed that for democracy to thrive, every individual must not only claim their rights but also respect the rights of others, so let December 10 be a reminder that our rights are our strength,” he stated.
Agunbiade also reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for good governance, rule of law, and citizen empowerment, while urging the media to continue playing its vital role in promoting accountability and protecting human rights across the nation.
