The Kofar Mata dye pits in Kano, northern NigeriaThe Managing Director of Nike Art Gallery, Nike Okundaye, on Monday called for the revival of traditional dye on fabrics to improve the nation’s revenue.

Okundaye said in Lagos that the traditional dye culture on fabrics was disrupted since the period of colonisation.

She, therefore, urged the Federal Government to save the country’s traditional dye culture from extinction.

Okundaye noted that before colonisation, Nigerians had their ways, tradition and culture of doing things before they were eroded.

“The colonial masters discouraged the use of traditional dye on fabrics. They claimed that traditional dye on fabrics was not healthy for the body. People were encouraged to do away with their African culture and embrace western culture. A lot of Nigerians destroyed their dye pits to accommodate foreign fabrics and textile,’’ Okundaye said.

Okundaye said that traditional dye of fabrics were difficult to produce in large quantities, adding that the process discouraged Nigerians from the use of traditional means.

She added that the people preferred industrial system because of its ability to produce large quantities of fabrics.
