New Real Madrid signing Trent Alexander-Arnold has revealed that the Spanish giants were the only club he ever considered leaving Liverpool for.
The 26-year-old right-back, who joined Madrid ahead of this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup, admitted the decision to leave Anfield was tough, but ultimately the chance to join the record 15-time European champions was one he couldn’t pass up.

“It was never a question of where, it was whether to go or not to go,” said Alexander-Arnold at his unveiling. “I always knew… if I was to ever leave Liverpool, it would only be to go to Real Madrid, that would be the only club for me.”
Liverpool fans initially booed the academy graduate after news of his departure broke, but later gave him a warm farewell on the final day of the Premier League season.
Alexander-Arnold signed a contract until 2031 in a deal that included a transfer fee, despite his contract expiring this summer, allowing him to join Madrid early for their Club World Cup campaign.
“A big reason why I joined is to be a part of that amazing history this club’s got,” he added. “To be part of the success going forward, joining an exciting, young team with a lot of potential.”
He links up with new Madrid coach and former Liverpool star Xabi Alonso, who famously won the Champions League with the Reds in 2005. Alexander-Arnold admitted Alonso was one of his childhood idols.
“I grew up a Liverpool fan. I remember Istanbul. Seeing the manager now, part of that incredible final… we’ve spoken a little bit, and I told him he was a big idol of mine growing up,” he said.
The England international, known for his vision and passing range, said Alonso’s influence helped shape his playing style.
“Watching him pass a ball influenced me. It gave me a hunger to improve and set high standards.”
Madrid, who also signed centre-back Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth, are aiming to bounce back from a trophyless season under Carlo Ancelotti.
With the Club World Cup in the U.S. on the horizon, Alexander-Arnold is eager to make an immediate impact.
