Foreign investors who accounted for 57.45 percent of year-to-date (YtD) equities trading on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) made about N30.11bn in equities trading gain as shown in their trading inflow and outflow position.
Though domestic investors accounted for 42.55 percent of equities trading, total foreign inflow wasN204.73bn while total foreign outflow was N234.84bn, cumulating to a total foreign transaction of N439.57bn as against N325.52bn worth of total domestic transactions at the bourse.
In April 2015, total foreign inflow was N54.20bn against outflow of N49.75. This is against March 2015 level when foreign inflow was N50.15bn as against outflow of N52.41bn.
In February 2015, it was N52.35bn (foreign inflow) against outflow of N81.60bn outflow. In January, the stock market recorded total foreign inflow of N48.03bn against an outflow of N51.08bn.
Domestic investors conceded about 0.5 percent of trading to foreign investors as the percentage of foreign transactions decreased from 55.73 percent to 50.25 percent while domestic transactions increased from 44.27 percent to 49.75 percent over the same period.
Domestic participation at the nation’s bourse increased to N102.91bn (about $0.52bn) in April 2015, up 26.33 percent from March 2015.
Total transactions increased by 12.41 percent from N184.02bn in March to N206.86bn in April and foreign portfolio investors’ inflows accounted for 26.20 percent of total transactions while the outflows accounted for 24.05 percent of the total transactions in April 2015.
In comparison to the same period in 2014, total Foreign Portfolio Investments (FPI) transactions decreased by 15.47 percent, whilst the total domestic transactions increased by 51.94 percent.
FPI inflows outpaced outflows which was consistent with the same period in 2014. Overall, there was an 8.47 percent increase in total transactions in
comparison to the same period in 2014. The FPI outflow includes sales transactions or liquidation of portfolio investments through the stock market, whilst the FPI inflow includes purchase transactions on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (equities only).
