Fix fuel scarcity, national security to save Nigeria, group tells FG
Industry professionals in various sectors of the economy have urged the Federal Government to show more commitment and transparency in addressing the perennial problems in the oil sector, especially as it relate to easing off the lingering fuel scarcity crisis in Nigeria.
The Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria (APBN) also called on the Federal Government and the states to address various aspects of security more holistically, adding that security operatives needed to show commitment, sincerity and transparency in handling security matters.
Omede Idris, president of APBN, stated this in Lagos while briefing the press after a Board meeting of the body hosted by Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).
Idris observed that budget issues should be taken more seriously with discipline, commitment, sincerity and transparency in its preparation, discuss, passage and assent, within stipulated budget time.
Isma’ila Muhammadu Zakari, president, ICAN, said there was no better time than now for professionals to provide a unique role in nation building.
Zakari observe that professionals should be ready to lead the way, combining their talent with strategy, to bring together likeminded stakeholders to brainstorm and strive to formulate practicable solutions to Nigeria’s problems.
“This is the time for professional bodies from various disciplines to interact, share ideas and proffer solutions to the challenges being faced by our nation,” he said.
He opined that efficient and appropriate infrastructure with attendant good service and service delivery are fundamental ingredients of good governance and people centred programmes.
According to Zakari, “APBN will continue to draw attention and stimulate these drives for common good of our people and nation where wastage from ill- conceived and inappropriately situated infrastructure are discouraged.”
He called on the government, MDAs and organised private sector to accord APBN and professional bodies, associations, societies, institutes and institutions more attention and take the recommendations from APBN and member bodies seriously on professional issues.
“Government must accept the stack reality that Professionals are key and fundamental to viable and sustainable development, guided by good policies, leadership and governance,” he said.
