No fewer than 44 shops were destroyed in an early morning fire that gutted parts of the popular Singer Market in Kano metropolis, Kano State, on Tuesday.
The incident, which occurred around 5:00 a.m., razed 25 temporary shops and 19 stores, with goods worth millions of naira lost to the inferno.
According to a statement issued by Saminu Abdullahi, Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, the fire started from one of the temporary shops attached to a building known as Abdulmunafi Yunusa House.
He said the agency received a distress call from one Mubarak Muhammad, prompting the deployment of firemen from various stations within the Kano metropolitan area to the scene.
“Upon arrival, our personnel found a one-storey building measuring about 150 by 150 feet engulfed in flames. The rescue operation faced challenges due to poor road access caused by trailers parked indiscriminately around the area,” the statement read.
Abdullahi attributed the incident to a faulty electrical connection and urged traders and residents to ensure proper electrical installations to prevent future occurrences.
