The Federal Ministry of Environment has issued a flood warning for eleven states, including Akwa Ibom, Jigawa, and Katsina, predicting heavy flooding between July 16 and 20.
Usman Bokani, the director of the National Flood Early Warning Centre under the Ministry of Environment, made this statement in Abuja while issuing a flood prediction notice.
The advisory outlines a range of states and regions that could face significant flooding, including Adamawa (Mubi), Akwa Ibom (Edor, Upenekang, Oron, Eket), Borno (Ngala, Maiduguri), and Bauchi (Azare, Bauchi, Itas, Jama’are, Kafin-Madaki, Jama’a, Kari, Misau).

Other areas at risk include Cross River (Calabar, Akpap), Jigawa (Miga, Gwaram, Diginsa, Ringim, Dutse), Katsina (Daura), Kano (Kunchi, Kano, Gezawa, Wudil, Bebeji, Sumaila, Tudun Wada), Plateau (Jos, Bukuru, Mangu), Yobe (Jakusko, Machina, Dapchi), and Zamfara (Bungudu, Gusau).
Bokani called on state authorities and relevant organizations to implement preventive actions aimed at minimizing the impact of potential floods on lives and property.
Earlier, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) had flagged 30 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as high-risk flood zones for 2025. The agency also reported that 2,187 communities in 293 local government areas are categorized under moderate flood risk.
In 2024, flooding led to the tragic loss of 321 lives, displaced over 740,000 people, and affected more than 1.37 million individuals nationwide.
