The Federal Government has launched efforts to revive long-abandoned livestock facilities in Enugu State, aiming to unlock new economic opportunities in the sector.
In a statement, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, Minister of Livestock Development, said he on Wednesday concluded an extensive inspection of key facilities, including the 26.2-hectare Okpuje Pig and Progeny Centre, which has been idle for decades despite its 3,000-stock capacity.
The Minister praised the host community for maintaining the facility and confirmed plans to reactivate it, including establishing a modular abattoir for domestic and export bacon processing.
The Minister also assessed the 847-hectare Adada Cattle Multiplication Centre and its adjoining Adada Dam.
He described the area as “a paradise yet to be discovered” and said the dam would support irrigation for pasture development. Mukhtar highlighted the role of field-based engagement and public-private partnerships in transforming the facilities into productive assets.

Meanwhile, Jude Chinedu Asogwa, executive chairman of Nsukka, said the rehabilitation aligns with the state’s strategy to grow agriculture as an economic driver.
Also, in Uzo-Uwani, Chijioke Ezeugwu, the Chairman pledged full support for the centre’s revival.
The Minister also visited Mary Agro Farms in Udi and met livestock stakeholders, reiterating the Federal Government’s commitment to harnessing the livestock sector in line with President Tinubu’s vision of boosting non-oil contributions to national growth.
