Lambert Wellington, an industrialist, said on Wednesday that Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) were a panacea to a developed economy, with guaranteed employment opportunities.

Wellington stated this in an interview in Port Harcourt, while speaking on ways of overcoming unemployment in the country.

He said that SMEs were key to a sustainable economy, where almost every person was a potential entrepreneur.

“An airtime recharge card seller cannot beg for food, neither can he or she be desperate for a job, because he or she is able to generate some income.”

“A person can be selling food and at the same time schooling, without being dependent on his or her parents for money,’’ Wellington said.

The industrialist further explained that the SME sector was a viable one, capable of boosting any economy in the world.

Wellington, therefore, urged the youth to explore small investment opportunities not only for their own prosperity, but for that of the nation, as well.

He described youth development as the foundation for any economy, saying that youth development policies were imperative for the common good of all.

According to him, the economy cannot grow without the entrepreneurial spirit of the youths to drive a self-reliant nation.

Wellington called on the youth to be explorative and urged the Federal Government to create an enabling environment for the SMEs to thrive.

The industrialist expressed confidence that the government of President Muhammadu Buhari would promote SME growth and development in the country.
