New IG may emerge today as Buhari noticeably absent at Council of state meeting, Abuja

A new Inspector General (IG) of police may finally emerge today (Tuesday) at the National Council of States meeting, chaired by President Goodluck Jonathan which is currently in session at the Presidential Villa.

Conspicuously absent at the Council is former president and All Progressive Congress (APC) Chieftain Muhammadu Buhari.

The Council of Stat, which is the highest advisory body to the President consists of the Vice President, former heads of states and the governors of the 36 states including the FCT minister, former and present Chief Justices of the Federation, the Senate President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Inspector General of police.

Word is, the Council may at this its second meeting for the year, take a decision to either appoint a new Inspector General of Police or retain Mohammed Abubakar, the outgoing IG.

It can be recalled that Abubakar’s tenure of office had expired in June, following his reaching of the retirement age, as stipulated by the Police Service Acts.

All living, former Heads of States and government except Buhari are in attendance at the ongoing meeting which is holding at the Council Chambers.

Heads of States present include, Olusegun Obasanjo, Shehu Shagari, Yakubu Gowon, Ibrahim Babangida, Ernest Shonekan, Abdusalami Abubakar while Muhammadu Buhari is absent.
