President Goodluck Jonathan has ordered the immediate cancellation of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) recruitment exercise after a stampede led to the deaths of more than 20 applicants and scores injured.
Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, who disclosed this to State House correspondents at Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council meeting, said the President further directed that all those who lost their loved ones would have automatic slot for three applicants, one of whom must be a woman.
Jonathan also directed that all those who sustained injuries and are currently hospitalised be given automatic employment in the service.
The President set up a committee led by the Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission, to conduct a fresh exercise. The committee has the Comptroller-General of NIS as well as representatives of the Inspector-General of Police and the heads of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Coprs, Nigerian Prisons Service, State Security Service and the Federal Road Safety Commission as members.
