The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has urged Nigerian students to avoid using the internet for criminal activities, warning that such conduct can have serious legal consequences and undermine their future.
The anti-graft agency gave the advice during an interactive session held on Friday, June 20, 2025, with students from the Department of International Relations, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, who were on an educational visit to the Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 of the EFCC.
In a statement signed by Dele Oyewale, Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC, the Commission stressed the importance of responsible digital behaviour and encouraged students to channel their creativity into productive ventures.
Michael Nzekwe, Zonal Director of the Lagos office, who was represented by Ayo Oyewole, Deputy Commander of the EFCC and Head of Public Affairs Directorate, Lagos, said the youth must begin to harness their creative energies toward innovative ideas that contribute to national development.
“As youths, you must begin to look inward and challenge your creative abilities to bring up ideas, perspectives, and drives that can grow the economy,” he stated.
He further appealed to the students to support the Commission’s anti-corruption campaign by distancing themselves from internet fraud, popularly known as “yahoo yahoo,” and any other form of financial crime.
In his remarks, Ibukun David, a lecturer in the Department who led the students on the excursion, thanked the EFCC for the warm reception and impactful session.
He commended the Commission for educating the students on its operations and pledged that the group would act as ambassadors by sensitizing the public on the dangers of cybercrime and the importance of integrity.
The statement noted that the visit was part of the EFCC’s strategy to engage young Nigerians and promote a culture of accountability and patriotism through awareness and education.
