According to the leadership of the Joint Action Committee of NASU and SSANU, they will be immediately commencement of a two-week warning strike effect Friday 22 January, 2021.

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have given the federal government seven days to address outstanding demands or face an indefinite strike.

In a letter dated 12 September and addressed to the Minister of Education, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the two unions said the ultimatum followed the government’s failure to resolve long-standing grievances despite repeated reminders.

Signed by Mohammed Ibrahim and Prince Peters Adeyemi, presidents of SSANU and NASU respectively, the letter listed withheld salaries, arrears from the recently approved 25/35 per cent salary increment, and what the unions described as the “unjust” sharing of the ₦50 billion earned allowances as unresolved issues.

The unions alleged that non-teaching staff were shortchanged in the allocation, while members in inter-university centres were completely excluded. They added that although a tripartite committee was agreed upon in July to resolve the matter, no progress has been made.

JAC also criticised the delay in renegotiating the 2009 FGN–NASU/SSANU agreements, noting that while the government had concluded talks with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the renegotiation committee inaugurated in October 2024 had not met with the non-teaching unions since December last year.

They warned that unless their demands are met by 15 September, members will down tools.

The threat comes amid a separate dispute between ASUU and the federal government over similar unmet obligations.
