The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) say that candidates now have the option to re-take one of the four parts of IELTS (Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking) if they did not do well in it.
It’s the biggest tweak to one of the world’s most taken tests since its inception in 1989.
The so-called “One Skill Retake” means that concerned candidates who failed any four test parts can re-take such a part without necessarily having to re-take all the parts as was the former practice.
The IELTS One Skill Retake is being launched in 43 countries, including Nigeria. Other countries include Algeria, Armenia, Australia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Canada, Colombia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, and Iraq.
Others are Jordan, Kenya, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Macau, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, New Zealand, Oman, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Qatar, Romania, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tunisia, Uganda, United Arab Emirates, and Uzbekistan.
It will continue to be launched in other regions and countries worldwide throughout 2023.
Candidates can only take a “IELTS One Skill Retake” 60 days after their original test.
The One Skill Retake is to help candidates feel “confident” going into their test, IELTS noted in a November 27 report.

It is available for both Academic and General Training tests.
“We know most people get the scores they need the first time, but if you feel you have not performed to your best in all areas, IELTS One Skill Retake can help get you back on track,” managers of the British-administered test said.
“You can choose to take the IELTS One Skill Retake at any test centre where it is offered,” the report added.
Nigerian writers of the test pay N107,500.
The format and timing for the retake is the same as that individual skill in a full IELTS test; only you can save time by not needing to complete the other three skills.
It is a new way to help students reach their potential and showcase their full English language ability.
The IELTS One Skill Retake can only be taken once and is only available on computers in selected test centres.
